By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life 2 opens the door to a world where the player’s presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors even the emotions of both friends and enemies. Valve’s debut title wins more than 50 game-of-the-year awards on its way to being named “Best PC Game Ever” by PC Gamer, and launches a franchise with more than eight million retail units sold worldwide. HALF-LIFE sends a shock through the game industry with its combination of pounding action and continuous, immersive storytelling. Where Black Mesa felt like a party, HL2 feels like a walk home alone.Īs an experience, it's like in 28 days later when Jim's walking across London with his little bag of soda. In Black Mesa you have a bunch of answers but in Half-Life 2's story you have nothing but unanswerable questions. That's not to say that Valve lacked this ethos when making HL2, but they did it differently. It may seem counter-intuitive, like eating dessert before dinner - and if you fell in love with the world-building, character, world design, and detail that Crowbar Collective put into their masterpiece then you'll feel that Half-Life 2 is desolate by comparison. Honestly, my advice is to go for the original HL2 experience straight out of Black Mesa. But considering that BM is a full optimization of HL2's engine, and due to Crowbar's design ethos, you may start making comparisons. If you liked Black Mesa's gameplay, you'll find that BM is literally just HL2's but with sliding mechanics. Half-Life 2 and its episodes have aged like wine.
